Classes are divided into groups of disciplines. The term 'disciplines' applies to Final Fantasy XIV in a different way than the term 'job' applied to Final Fantasy XI. With the discipline system, not only are the classic mage and melee heroes and heroines considered, but also the 'crafting' and 'gathering' classes. There are currently four unique disciplines: Disciples of War (DoW), Disciples of Magic (DoM), Disciples of Hand (DoH), and Disciples of Land (DoL). Within each discipline, a player will find a unique playing style. Players can play as all classes on a single character and can switch between classes by equipping the appropriate weapon or tool.

Disciples of War and Magic[edit edit source]

The DoW consists of the use of melee and weapon damage to take down powerful foes. In a similar fashion, the DoM encompass all spell casters and users of magic. These two disciplines represent the typical population of characters built to team up or fly solo and wreak havoc on enemies.

The DoH are analogous to the crafters of FFXI. These classes develop by focusing on the production and manipulation of armor and weapons, medicines, and more. Finally, the DoL can be viewed as an interpretation of the classic 'H.E.L.M.' domain in FFXI, wherein hobbies like logging, mining, and fishing took place. With FFXIV, players can now choose to grow through these hobbies, while working to gather useful materials that should prove valuable to other players, especially those involved with the DoH.

Final Fantasy XIV Online, like its predecessor Final Fantasy XI, is a MMORPG. Upon subscribing, a player can create a custom character (chosen between the five races - each having two different clans - available in the game: Hyur (Midland and Highland), Miqo'te (Seeker of the Sun and Keeper of the Moon), Lalafell (Plainsfolk and Dunefolk), Elezen (Wildwood and Duskwight) and Roegadyn (Sea Wolf and Hellsguard) to explore the world of Eorzea, starting in one on the three City States: Limsa Lomina, Gridania and Ul'dah.

The class of the character can be changed at any time by switching the equipped weapons or tools. They are sorted into four disciplines: Disciples of War (Gladiator, Marauder, Pugilist, Archer and Lancer), Disciples of Magic (Thaumaturge and Conjurer), Disciples of the Land (Fisher, Miner and Botanist) and Disciples of the Hand (Carpenter, Blacksmith, Armorer, Goldsmith, Tanner, Weaver, Alchemist and Culinarian). The Disciples of War and Magic's skills are battle oriented, while Disciples of the Land use theirs to gather Materials on the field, which are used by the Disciples of the Hand for crafting various objects.

The battles are skill based: the player chooses the skill to use, which then needs to charge up, do its effect, then recharge to be available again. In party play, the skills can be coordinated following tactics called Battle Regimen. Defeating enemies yields experience points and skill points. Experience points will have the physical level of the character increase, and the skill points increase the character's current class rank. Enemy toughness can easily be assessed by the color of their aura, displayed next to their names (blue being the easiest and red the toughest). Unlike FFXI, playing in a party (of up to six members) affects the enemy's difficulty, and the aura color will be displayed accordingly.

The main way of getting by in Eorzea is to use Guildleves, which allow to participate in Levequests. They are tasks given to the character to complete (sometimes under a time-limit) to gain more experience, skill points, money and various awards. Once acquired, Guildleves can be used at Aetheryte Crystals or sometimes by talking to a specific NPC. If the Levequest consists of eliminating specific targets, these targets can only be seen by the members participating in the quest. Upon completion, an aetherial node appears and can be used to instantly teleport back to the Aetheryte Crystal.
